At the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy of Ghent University, there is now a vacancy for a temporary assignment with a duration of three years (non-renewable):
A position as fulltime doctor-assistant at the History Department (Ghent University, LW03), (tel. : 09-331 02 89) – remuneration at 100%: min. € 29,069.73,max. € 45,317.25 (paid at 157,69% at the date of publication) for an historian specialized in social and economic history.
Profile:
Candidates must:
- hold a PhD degree with doctoral thesis or a degree recognized as equivalent at the date of recruitment;
- have a PhD dissertation in the field of social-economic history;
- have a publication record in peer reviewed book(s) or scholarly journal(s) with wide dissemination in the area of social-economic history;
- have conducted research on one or more aspects of social-economic history within the period starting from the Middle Ages up to the early 20th century.
Proven experience with the use of historical statistics is considered as an asset.
Job description:
- Carrying out high-level and productive research in the field of social-economic history (at least 70% of the working time should be devoted to academic research);
- Academic teaching;
- Service to society as needed for the History Department.

Announcement October 17th 2012: Two lectures by Jane Whittle, on Tuesday November 6th 2012 (England's agrarian development: land, labour and consumption 1450-1750) and on Wednesday November 7th 2012 (Women’s work in the rural economies of medieval Europe)
Tijdens de eerste week van november brengt Prof. Dr. Jane Whittle, verbonden aan de University of Exeter, een bezoek aan onze universiteit in het kader van een uitwisseling binnen het CORN-netwerk.
Jane Whittle heeft zich toegelegd op de geschiedenis van ruraal Engeland tijdens de late middeleeuwen en de vroegmoderne periode. Haar interesse gaat uit naar economische ontwikkeling en eigendomsrechten, opstanden en protest, consumptie en rurale huishoudens. Tegenwoordig specialiseert ze zich in vrouwenarbeid en dienstboden op het platteland. Van haar hand verschenen, naast talrijke artikels, het afgelopen decennia de volgende drie monografieën: J. Whittle, The Development of Agrarian Capitalism: Land and Labour in Norfolk 1440-1580, 2000; M. Overton, J. Whittle, D. Dean and A. Hann, Production and Consumption in English Households, 1600-1750, 2004; J. Whittle and E. Griffiths, Consumption and Gender in the Early Seventeenth Century Household: the world of Alice Le Strange, 2012.

- woensdag 7 november, 18u, Universiteit Antwerpen, lokaal R.012: de jaarlijkse Pirenne-lezing van de Vlaamse Werkgroep Mediëvistiek met als onderwerp Women’s work in the rural economies of medieval Europe. De toegang is gratis maar er wordt gevraagd om aanwezigheid zeker kenbaar te maken bij het secretariaat van de Vlaamse Werkgroep Mediëvistiek, dat zijn tjamke.snijders@ugent.be of bram.caers@ua.ac.be

De Vakgroepen Geschiedenis – Kunstwetenschappen en Archeologie van de Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Faculteit Letteren en Wijsbegeerte) nodigen alle geïnteresseerden uit op de Lessencyclus: “(Over)leven op het platteland van toen: productiestrategieën, landschap en milieu: een lange termijn visie (middeleeuwen-19de eeuw)”
